A whale of a time

A whale of a time

With a microclimate that ensures balmy weather pretty much all year round, La Gomera is close to paradise for sun-seeking holidaymakers. But the Atlantic waters surrounding the second smallest Canary Island are reputedly among the richest in the world for whale-watching.

Pauline Wilson and son Campbell gave the whale-watching trip a miss – but daughter and son-in-law Carolyn and Grahame Dean and grandchildren Lucas, eight, and five-year-old Amber were delighted to take to the high seas and, sure enough, whales and dolphins were there in profusion.

“It’s fantastic!” enthused Carolyn. “I never thought it was possible to get so close to these majestic creatures, in their natural habitat – and so many of them. The children loved the trip too – especially when the captain let them steer the boat!”

Back on dry land, relaxing in the family’s villa at El Balcón de Santa Ana, HPB’s Gomeran home, Bondholder Pauline – from Northumberland where, coincidentally, HPB has opened Lucker, its latest holiday destination – explained what it is that, for her, makes HPB so special. “I invested six years ago, after my husband died. And I can say without reservation that it has been brilliant, and has enabled us to enjoy some fantastic family holidays – like this one. This is our second time here, and I have to say it’s a favourite; it ticks all the boxes, for me and my family. There’s so much to do, and the facilities – the restaurant, the swimming pools, the gardens – are fabulous. And if you want to go on an excursion – like the youngsters are doing today – well, that’s available too.

“Another plus is that the service is always so good – particularly important when you’ve got young children in tow. If there’s a crisis (not that there has been) you know that the site manager will be on hand to sort things out. That’s really reassuring. “As it happens I’m a member of the Bond Companions Club – I joined as soon as I invested. I don’t use it very much yet – though I’m sure I will; but I do get together informally with other local BCC-ers.

“Right now though, it’s all about family. We love being able to holiday together like this, and we’ve been enjoying ourselves enormously. And I know Carolyn, Grahame and the little ones are having – sorry, but it has to be said – a whale of a time!”
