Getting Fizzical
A stay at St. Siméon gives you the perfect opportunity to see where the region's renowned sparkling wine comes from. You can visit one, or more, of the many Champagne houses on Le Mont's doorstep and sample some of the magic for yourself, or buy souvenirs straight from the source.
In general, the smaller houses offer the greater rewards, but you've got to know where they are...
Le Mont runs excellent Champagne excursions that will take you to some of the best Champagne houses: 'famous-name' establishments but also many of the smaller operations that line the Marne Valley.
The most attractive part of the River Marne has to be where it flows through the stunning Champagne vineyards and the surrounding little towns. Château-Thierry, Romeny-sur-Marne and Condé-en-Brie are just a few of the many quaint little places.
About 20kms from Château-Thierry is the brilliant Sourdet-Diot Champagne house in La Chapelle-Monthodon. The vines here were first planted in the 60s by Raymond Sourdet and he sold his harvest to some of the largest Champagne houses around. In 1980 Patrick and Nadine Sourdet decided to turn it into an independent business – creating their own Champagne on their own property from their own grapes. Today Patrick and Nadine, along with their daughter and son-in-law, are delighted to welcome visitors from Le Mont, and a regular excursion leaves on Thursdays, taking guests from St. Siméon to visit them.
The excursion will include a delicious lunch and is a fantastic opportunity to delve a little deeper into the culture of this region. There are so many independent vineyards to discover here, or even the larger establishments of Épernay, so you wont be stuck for destinations if you prefer to go it alone. Either way the Marne Valley is an incredible place to explore and you're guaranteed to enjoy yourself.
