Skiing on your doorstep
Saalbach-Hinterglemm is only a 10 minute drive west, with the highest skiing at 2,102m. With 120km of marked runs, there's excellent skiing for beginners and intermediates, as well as a number of good routes for experts.
It has the best ski school in Austria, a good late season snow record, and lively après ski and nightlife. There's also a range of other activities, from skating and ice hockey to riding and hiking.
Alternatively, head 10 minutes south east of Viehhofen to the Zell-am-See-Kaprun region, which has 138km of pistes. It offers plenty of other activities too, including cross-country skiing, sledging and hiking.
Zell-am-See is one of Austria's most popular family-friendly destinations. Its highest skiing is at 2,000m, with excellent routes for beginners and intermediates. The lake-side medieval town also caters for non-skiers, with skating, water sports, a golf course and much more.
Four miles south of Zell-am-See, Kaprun sits a little higher and has its highest skiing at 3,029m. It offers guaranteed skiing on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier (365 days every year) and one of the longest vertical drops in Austria at 2,098m.
