Saalbach-Hinterglemm is only a 10 minute drive west, with the highest skiing at 2,102m. With 120km of marked runs, there's excellent skiing for beginners and intermediates, as well as a number of good routes for experts.

It has the best ski school in Austria, a good late season snow record, and lively après ski and nightlife. There's also a range of other activities, from skating and ice hockey to riding and hiking.

Alternatively, head 10 minutes south east of Viehhofen to the Zell-am-See-Kaprun region, which has 138km of pistes. It offers plenty of other activities too, including cross-country skiing, sledging and hiking.

Zell-am-See is one of Austria's most popular family-friendly destinations. Its highest skiing is at 2,000m, with excellent routes for beginners and intermediates. The lake-side medieval town also caters for non-skiers, with skating, water sports, a golf course and much more.

Four miles south of Zell-am-See, Kaprun sits a little higher and has its highest skiing at 3,029m. It offers guaranteed skiing on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier (365 days every year) and one of the longest vertical drops in Austria at 2,098m.

For a break from the slopes, take a short drive north east to the Ritzen Castle and Saalfelden Museum (Schloß Ritzen und Heimatmuseum). The museum tells the story of Saalfelden village life and culture, with traditional handicrafts, folk art, minerals and the Alps' largest crib exhibition.

Or head further afield to the city of Salzburg, about 90 minutes north of Viehhofen. Over the ages, this cultural gem has been influenced by many great composers, singers, authors and other prominent figures.

These are reflected in the 4,000 events that the city hosts every year, ranging from Mozart Week to Salzburg Jazz Festival. In addition, there are numerous art galleries, theatres, concerts and dance performances.

Only an hour south east, Bad Gastein sits in the midst of the Hohe Tauern National Park in the Gastein Valley, 1,000m above sea level. The town's buildings date back to the Belle Époque and it is most famous for its thermal springs (and resulting spa and wellness amenities).

However, it also enjoys reliable snow conditions, making it an ideal ski destination. Other activities include cross-country trails, hiking paths, running and Nordic walking trails, cycling and mountain biking tours.

On the way, stop off at the impressive Taxenbach Gorge (Kitzlochklamm Taxenbach) to admire the brutal force of the Rauriser Ache river. Follow the gorge's 16th-century footpaths and tunnels, as well as exploring a small limestone cave, with a guided tour.
